Greetings,
Over the years, many school-based Occupational Therapists have asked me if it is "worth it" to do neurodevelopmental movements with children when there is only minimal time and no parent involvement to do movements at home with the child.
If you only have minimal time, it is even more important to do these innate rhythmic and reflex movements because:
- They are the most powerful movements we know of for brain development
- They are excellent for calming
- They are the innate way to build sensory processing systems
- They develop the foundation for functional tasks
- They are soothing and can greatly reduce anxiety and behavior challenges
- They WORK--even in small amounts! (Everyone is different, but sometimes astounding results happen in just ONE session, as the videos here show).
While it is very good to work with parents if at all possible, you may still be providing enormous benefits even in situations where there is very limited time for movements. I trust these great stories, will convince you it is worth your time to offer these movements to your students and to individuals of all ages--even if you have minimal time.
Thank you Kelli Meer, OTR/L, for sharing your success stories and your enthusiasm!
