About Sonia Story

Sonia Story developed the Brain and Sensory Foundations training to provide in-depth, comprehensive training in the use of innate rhythmic and infant primitive and postural reflex movements These neurodevelopmental movements are foundational for addressing sensory, learning, physical, behavioral, emotional, social, and speech challenges.

The innate movements Sonia teaches are used successfully by OTs, PTs, SLPs, mental health therapists, trauma specialists, educators, parents, and health practitioners for their clients of all ages. Sonia is the author of a white paper giving the relevance, rationale, and evidence basis for using innate neurodevelopmental movements in OT and PT practice. Sonia’s white paper was deemed by a reviewer at Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) to be excellent for showing the relevance of innate neurodevelopmental movements to the practice of physical therapy.

Sonia Story earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a combined major in biology and psychology. She studied two bodywork systems—Orthobionomy and Hanna Somatics—which influenced her later application of neurodevelopmental movement tools. Sonia extensively studied innate neurodevelopmental movements with Harald Blomberg, MD; Moira Dempsey; Svetlana Masgutova; Mary Kawar, OT; and other instructors. While earning certifications to teach Rhythmic Movement Training (RMTi) and other movement courses, Sonia maintained a private practice effectively using these tools—first to overcome her own challenges with sensory issues and anxiety—then for helping individuals of all ages. The majority of Sonia’s clients are school-age children. Sonia Story taught the RMTi curriculum for 10 years and has been teaching the Brain and Sensory Foundations curriculum since 2008.

Since 2012, Sonia has been publishing case study reports—submitted by students of the Brain and Sensory Foundations, First level course. Nearly 150 case study reports are posted on the MovePlayThrive website showcasing the outstanding results using these innate neurodevelopmental movements tools.

Sonia was a presenter at the 2018 Autism One conference on how innate neurodevelopmental movements help with sensory issues. Sonia’s work has been featured in the book, Almost Autism: Recovering Children from Sensory Processing Disorder, and in the books Special Ed Mom Survival Guide; Family Health Revolution; and Same Journey, Different Paths, Stories of Auditory Processing Disorder.

Sonia is the author of the widely used Importance of Integrating Reflexes information sheet, and the article: Can ADHD Be Dissolved?, about how and why innate neurodevelopmental movements can help to overcome ADHD symptoms by addressing related balance, postural, and sensory-motor challenges.

Sonia is influenced by further training in Developmental Movement, Nonviolent Communication, and Storytelling with Children. She has studied with Bill Hubert of Bal-A-Vis-X, and with O. Fred Donaldson, PhD, author and developer of the Original Play Playshops.

Sonia is particularly sensitive to the issues and challenges that families are faced with today. In her own life, and with her children, family, clients, students and colleagues, Sonia continues to see the profound benefits of doing neurodevelopmental movements, and she loves to share these life-changing tools with others.

Sonia is currently enrolled in a Master's Program in Movement Science at the University of Idaho.
